The Kiteboarding Community of New York City

Kiteboarding

Established in 2018, NYC kiteboarding has grown into a thriving community of beginners, intermediate and advanced riders.

Whenever there is wind people are kiting on the beaches of NY & NJ and share rides. Get on the WhatsApp group to join in.

Enjoy Kiteboarding in NY & NJ and be safe!
Note: any kiteboarding activity is at your own risk.

Kite Socials

Every second Wednesday of the month we organize kite drinks in Manhattan on West 46th Street.

Kite drinks are a great way to meet other NYC kiteboarders and organize trips to the NY & NJ beaches.

Check the Social Page to attend.

Kite Trips

Many NYC kiteboarders travel to Outer Banks and have rooms available (keep an eye on the chat).

For the last few years, in January, 15-20 kiteboarders travelled to Diani Beach, Kenya for two weeks of kiteboarding and an African game safari.

The last one was again epic. More information here.

NYC Wind Season

The official wind season is from March through December and the best months are April to November, but people kite whole year round.

Wind speed varies from 15 – 30 knots and is predominantly southerly in the main season and northerly during the winter.

Nine to 15 metre kites for the majority of kiteable days. Neoprene is useful throughout most of the year. In the summer we ride in boardshorts or a shorty as the water temp reaches 70°F and in the spring and early autumn a full 3/2 spring suit.

Daytime summer air temperatures peak at 26 – 32°C / 78 - 90°F. However, in the winter you’ll need full thick winter gear - it can get very cold.

Kite Spots.

The New York City area offers many great kite spots with beautiful beaches. Kiteboarding with the backdrop of the skyline of Manhattan never gets old really. There are amazing Cape Hatteras like flat water spots and great waves on the Atlantic Ocean. There is a spot for every wind direction, riding level or style. And the kite crew in NYC is one of the friendliest in the world. More on spots click below.

Safety.

Kiteboarding is a  safe sport as long as you know what you are doing. Never attempt to teach yourself and always take lessons with a certified school. Never go out on your own and get spot information. When you take the right safety precautions, know the rules and have control over the kite, kiteboarding can be a life changing sport. Contact us for information on schools and getting started in kiteboarding.

Getting Around.

Subway - The B & Q trains take you from Manhattan to Sheepheads bay from where you can take an Uber or Lyft to Plumb beach.

Ferry - The Seastreak ferry takes you from lower manhattan to Highlands, NJ and normally in summer straight to Sandy Hook (opposite the kitespot).

Train - Train to Long Island is possible, but does not bring you close to the public kitespots.

Car - Naturally the easiest way to get to the beach. Though parking is a problem in summer. There are many kiteboarders in the community that have cars and are more than willing to give you a ride.

Motorbike - No brainer, if you can carry your gear and bear the cold.

Yacht - From July to October there could be weekend trips to Sandy Hook by yacht again.
